North Shore House Painting looks after repaints across Auckland's North Shore: weatherboard, plaster and brick outside, walls and ceilings inside, and the roof, deck and fence around them. Every job starts the same way. A painter who works your part of the Shore comes to the house, checks every surface, and puts a fixed price in writing. Good preparation is what makes the finish last, so that is what the quote is built around. Below: what a repaint includes, what it usually costs in New Zealand right now, how often a house needs one, and the colours that suit a North Shore street.
Outside
Exterior painting for weatherboard, plaster and brick, with gutters, fascias and window frames.
Inside
Interior painting: walls, ceilings, doors, trims and kitchen cabinets, room by room.
Around the house
Roof painting, deck staining and fence painting and staining.
What a repaint costs
Published Auckland prices put the exterior of a typical family home at about $12,000 to $22,000 or more plus GST, and a small single-storey house at $7,000 to $12,000 or more. Two-storey homes and heritage villas cost more because of scaffolding, repairs and trims. The inside of a three-bedroom home is about $5,000 to $15,000 or more.
Outside, typical home

Plus GST. Walls, ceilings and trims.
Iron roof
$3,500 to $6,500 or more

Hourly rates published by Auckland painters sit at about $40 to $60 or more, but most quote a fixed price for the whole job. See house painting prices for every range and the extras that move a quote.
What a good repaint includes
A good repaint is mostly preparation. The house is washed, loose paint is scraped and sanded, rot is repaired, gaps are filled and bare timber is primed. Then two finish coats go on, in finishes made for each surface. Gardens, paths and floors are protected throughout, and the site is cleaned up at the end. The full process is on house painting on the North Shore.
- Look and quote. Every side checked, a fixed price in writing.
- Wash and prepare. Mould off, loose paint out, repairs done.
- Prime and paint. Bare timber primed, then two coats.
- Walk round. Touch-ups, clean-up, everything put back.
How often a house needs repainting
Many exteriors are repainted every seven to ten years or so. Homes near the sea in Takapuna, Milford, Devonport and the East Coast Bays, and walls in full sun, often need it sooner. Interiors usually last longer. Repaint when the paint turns chalky, cracks or flakes, before bare timber starts to rot. A wash every year or two helps the coat last.
Painting over old paint
Old paint can be painted over if it is sound, clean and well stuck. It needs a wash, a light sand so the new coat can grip, and primer on any bare spots. Flaking, chalky or peeling paint has to be scraped back to a firm edge first, or the new paint fails with it.
On North Shore homes built before the 1980s, Health New Zealand advises presuming the old paint contains lead until a test shows otherwise. That changes how it is sanded and cleaned up, so tell the painter the age of the house.
Colours that suit North Shore homes
Whites, off-whites, pale greys and light taupes are the most used colours on New Zealand repaints, according to Resene's round-up of colours used outside. Villas and bungalows suit a light body with contrasting trims. Modern homes take darker colours well. A two or three colour scheme, with a strong front door, looks the most expensive. FAQs
What is the best paint brand in New Zealand?
There is no single best brand. New Zealand painters mostly use the large local paint makers, and what matters most is using one complete system from the same maker, made for your surface and applied as the data sheet says. Ask for the product names in your quote, so you can compare painters on the same terms.
Do I need to be home while the house is painted?
Not for an exterior repaint. The painter needs access to every side, a power point and a tap, and to know about gates, pets and alarms. For interiors, someone usually needs to let the painter in each day, and the rooms are done in turn so you can keep living at home.
Which suburbs do you cover?
The whole North Shore, from Devonport, Takapuna and Milford to the East Coast Bays, Northcote, Birkenhead, Glenfield, Albany and Greenhithe. See the suburbs we cover for the full list and the kinds of homes common in each part of the Shore.
How do I get a quote?
Fill in the short form on this page or call us. Your suburb and a few words about the job are enough. A local painter will call to arrange a visit, look at the house, and give you a written quote. You decide whether to go ahead.
